Abstract

The contemporary economic arguments are that gateway ports, such as the Hanshin Port of Kobe and Osaka and their surrounds, play a key role in supporting both social and economic development. The Kinki region forms an important backbone to the Japanese economy generating 17% of national GDP with a population of 21 million within a radius of 150 km of the ports (City of Osaka, 2015).
